Boston Whitehall Pulling Boat Plans

Lines view of the Freighter Canoe

The Boston Whitehall Plans are for a 17' classic rowing craft.

Like the 14'  and 16' New York Whitehall pulling boat, this boat is a classic design commonly built in the mid to late 1800's.

This Whitehall is derived from a boat commonly built in the finer Boston shops.  Where this boat differs from the 14 footer on this site is in its distinctive sleek design, which turns this boat into a rowing machine.

Even a casual rowing outing in this boat will cover a good deal of distance on the water.  In fact it rows so fast, you can actually hear the water slapping up on the bow as the cutwater slices through your favorite waterway.  You will find that you will have to slow down to make your turn as the developed keel line on this boat wants to go fast and straight.

I often find my mind wandering as I build a rowing rhythm and if you are not careful, you will find yourself miles from your launch site.  You can certainly take along a passenger or even two.  There is even a set of additional oarlocks for tandem rowing.  Where you can stand up and walk around the 14' Whitehall while underway, you will want to keep the center of gravity lower in this boat as it is more slender with a rounder bilge.

If you are looking for a stable, comfortable boat that will not only give you a nice outing but a good workout if you wish, then this boat is most definitely worth looking at closely.

The boat shown here is finished without any paint, and all coloring is natural wood finish.  However, you are encouraged to make your boat your own.

We have wanted to release the Whitehall Plans for some years now, however in our opinion, the chances of building success for all but those with significant building experience would be limited. As we are in the business of helping people to build boats and not simply to sell plans, we decided not to release the plans without a thorough and meticulous DVD set, as it has proven to be so successful with our canoes.

So, almost two years ago as of the time of this writing, we began the planning stages of filming and finally, in the winter of 2012, the DVD set was done.  We are particularly proud of this DVD set and are convinced, based on responses received from our test market, that the first time builder will be able to build our series of Whitehalls.

This 4 DVD set begins with the making of the forms and building jigs and brings you on our journey of building the Whitehall boats right up to launch day.  Every detail of the build is covered, including all of the techniques we have used over the last 30 years of our boat building journey.

What you need to know about our plans package:

Our goal is to get you what you need to be successful.  We are an operating boat shop and are building every day and we give you what we would need if it were us purchasing.  We do not offer cheaper plans for half patterns or break packages into multiple DVD's in order to make them appear cheaper.  Our patterns are full size, our plans are detailed, and our DVD is produced specifically for this series of boats.  It is not generic in nature nor is it a sales pitch to get you to purchase a kit.  Whether you purchase a full boat kit or just the plans and DVD, our goal is to help you get your boat built so that you can enjoy the journey.  If you have a question, please don't hesitate to call or email us.

This product includes the DVD set "Building Whitehalls and Wherries"(discounted when it comes with plans and patterns).  We strongly recommend that you purchase the DVD set with the plans and feel you will be very happy you did!  However, we realize that for some of you this may not be your first time building a strip boat and have given you the option to subtract the DVD set from your order.
