18' Great Northern Freighter Canoe The Great Norther Freighter is a wilderness monster.  It is designed to run rivers and still water alike.  It will get you to the most remote river hideaway, or out on the lake for a great day of fishing.  Because its rounder bilge, fine water entry and integrated flooring sytem, wil will cut through rough waters.  The hull weight will vary depending on the materials used.  The freighter you see in the images above came out at about 280 lbs.  That was with a full floor system, decks and seats installed. 20' Mi'kmaq Northern Freighter Canoe A native of the north woods of New Brunswick, the Mi'kmaq Freighter Canoe Plans offers a 20 ft. freighter canoe with an elegant utilitarian design. It has been some 15 years now since I floated the Restigouche River in upper New Brunswick.  Among the many memorable things I saw on that trip was a Canadian freighter canoe, a truly utilitarian canoe with an eye towards elegance. As we drifted down the river with our guide, who claimed heritage to the Mi'kmaq tribe, I had some time to talk with him about these magnificent canoes and he was a wealth of information. Some time ago I had the opportunity to paddle the Restigouche River, a beautiful river that flows across the northwestern part of the province of New Brunswick and the southeastern part of Quebec. The trip included a number of rivers in the region. As I and my party toiled with the paddles on these magnificent waterways, I noticed a number of the natives going in the opposite direction, (up river) in a square sterned canoe then unknown to me.
