The Great Norther Freighter is a wilderness monster. It is designed to run rivers and still water alike. It will get you to the most remote river hideaway, or out on the lake for a great day of fishing.
Because its rounder bilge, fine water entry and integrated flooring sytem, wil will cut through rough waters. The hull weight will vary depending on the materials used. The freighter you see in the images above came out at about 280 lbs. That was with a full floor system, decks and seats installed.
The boat in this picture was going to be trucked from Maine to Texas and all points in between to fish every type of water. That meant rocky shores, possible logs in the river and any number of other obstacles. For that reason, this hull was covered with not only 2 layers of 10 oz cloth, it was topped off with a hybrid Kevlar and Carbon Fiber cloth. In short, this is one tough little boat.
We suggest to customers a 10 hp engine with typically gets this boat to about 18 mph on the water, however that will vary with the motor and the propeller. In my opinion, that is more than enough to run down that bass or get you to the camp. That said, this boat has been outfitted with 15 hp engines and performs well but you will have to balance the load. Anything over 15 hp is a complete waste of power.
The plans come complete with full size patterns for everything from floor supports to the transom, forms and stem. The floor boards are measured and outlined on the plans for convenience, however you can feel free to design your own.
This is an incredibly able craft and if you are a sportsman, this boat will deliver a lifetime of memories.
